Winemaker Tony Winspear

Winemaker Tony Winspear developed the first Balgownie Yarra Valley vintages and looks after our legendary winery and vineyards to this day.

Tony Winspear started his career in wine with Balgownie Estate in 1994 as a vineyard hand and cellar hand.

Duties at Balgownie Estate included all facets of vineyard and cellar work where wines were produced in a time-honoured manner with ‘handmade’ a perfect description of the process. The vines were hand pruned, hand harvested, vats hand plunged, and the skins basket pressed - traditional winemaking in the best sense.

Tony also worked in many vineyards in Central Victoria performing contract vineyard work helping in the production of premium fruit. Such vineyards included Mt Ida Vineyard in Heathcote, a dry grown vineyard neighbouring Georgia’s Paddock at Jasper Hill.

Whilst working at Balgownie Tony studied winemaking as a distance education student at Charles Sturt University Wagga.

He worked his way up the ranks from vineyard hand and cellar hand to assistant winemaker in 2005 and became Head Winemaker for Balgownie Estate in June 2012.

Balgownie produces elegant cool climate wines from the Yarra Valley and deeply complex and distinguished cellaring styles from the old vines growing in the original Bendigo vineyards. From 2015 Tony introduced light, low alcohol styles such as the Nouveau Syrah and the incredibly popular Rose.

In his 2021 Wine Companion James Halliday awarded Balgownie Estate the top rating of 5 Red Stars. The Estate has also received numerous awards over the last eight years including 8 trophies and 28 gold medals at Australian Wine Shows.

Tony is very much a hands-on winemaker very much at home in the cellar using traditional low intervention techniques. He is seeking to continue the tradition of making a true Balgownie cellaring style whilst also striving for balance and approachability.
